Reca Shabazz - Past Secretary - In Memoriam
We honor the life and legacy of Reca Shabazz, who served as our dedicated secretary until her passing in May 2024. Reca was a proud descendant of Jonas and Delse Rhine Cathey and Hardy and Mary Shelton’s children, Lee and Fannie Shelton Cathey. Her steadfast commitment to preserving her family’s rich heritage left an indelible mark on the Shelton Heritage Society and the many lives she touched.
Reca was the fourth great-granddaughter of Jonas and Delse Rhine Cathey and Hardy and Mary Shelton, and the third great-granddaughter of Lee and Fannie Shelton Cathey. A resident of The Colony, Texas (Dallas), she was also the loving wife of iconic Arkansas athlete Basil Shabazz and the devoted mother of three. She was the daughter of the late NFL Hall of Famer and Dallas Cowboys football player Rodrigo Barnes, an activist who was a member of the First Four, the pioneering group of African Americans to integrate Rice University’s football program.
Beyond her genealogical ties, Reca was an accomplished athlete and trailblazer in the world of broadcasting. She made history as one of the first, if not the first, African American female sports broadcasters at the Big 12 games for the Waco ABA League at Baylor University. She also co-hosted the Dave and Lisa Show on KBBW 94.5, under the name Lisa Raye, and served as the station’s news director. Her talents extended into freelance sports announcing for Baylor University and voice-over artistry for KXTV 11.
Reca’s dynamic career included being selected as a model under Deion and Pilar Sanders’ agency before choosing a different path, reflecting her versatility and passion for forging her own journey. Known for her gift of gab and warm personality, Reca had a unique ability to make anyone feel at ease.
Her passing in 2024 leaves a significant void in our community. Reca’s unwavering dedication to both her family and the Shelton legacy will continue to inspire us all. We remember her as not only a devoted professional but also as a cherished member of our extended family who lived with purpose and passion.
